What do you need?
If you’re confused between whether to design a website, or develop an app, this post will serve as guide to get an answer. People, primarily owing to overflow of information and unsolicited advice often can’t decide whether to spend money to design a website, go for ecommerce web design, or invest in getting a mobile app.
So when I hit the cross-road between building a responsive mobile website and mobile app, I confided in a trusted website developer. When I asked whether I should design a website or just an app, what he explained made immense sense. I am reproducing the same in my own words as under.
He said that both mobile app and mobile websites are similar in a way because they can be accessed via smartphones and tablets; and yet they are two very different mediums with different features and pre-requisites. A mobile app is a single independent program which needs downloading and installation onto a user’s mobile or tablet for use, whereas a mobile website is a website that is programed to be viewed on mobile phone and tablet. Mobile app can be downloaded from website or app store and is generally free.
But mobile website is a broader medium that you can view, communicate, and do business (i.e. communicate, buy, sell) via. In recent times however, there’s no denying that mobile app has become a very important tool and app usage for transactions has gone up manifolds.
A mobile website can be reached with help of an internet browser, and no downloading is required, all you need to view a website or engage in conversation is internet connection, whereas a mobile application needs downloading which you can do from an online store, or from the website itself. After downloading, it has to be saved on the device through which you intend to use it. In majority of cases app functioning isn’t dependent on internet connection.
Now who needs a mobile website and who can do with an app alone. A mobile app which is uploaded on the user’s smartphone is best suited for something that calls for frequent and repeated use. An app serves a specific and limited need, however it helps to increase customer loyalty.
Whether you should opt for mobile app or mobile website depends on your end goals. If your aim is to offer mobile-friendly content to your audience – a mobile website will do you good. However, if you want to be in touch with your customers, engage, interact, and communicate with customers all the time in order to retain their loyalty, a mobile app serves your purpose better.
Often web developer, after studying the nature of your business and understanding business goals and budget may advise you to have both in order to drive optimum mileage. A mobile website, supported by an app with right and focused strategy can take your business places.
Talk to your web developer, explain your vision clearly, and let him offer you advice whether designing a website will be good for you, or eCommerce design is what you should be aiming at, or an app, or a combination of them. If advice rings bell with you, go for it!
